Possible changes loom to rule enacted to reduce trucker fatigue

The “restart rule” is intended to reduce the number of fatigue-related crashes involving commercial trucks on California and U.S. roadways, but it may not make its way through the coming year. Per Safety + Health, safety advocates are speaking out in opposition of an Omnibus appropriations bill that has the capacity to eliminate the rule’s mandated breaks and likely increase trucker-involved, fatigue-related accidents as a result.

California’s seniors increasingly seeking treatment for falls

Slips and falls affect thousands of California’s seniors each year, and new statistics about the rising number of seniors in the state seeking treatment for falls has safety advocates looking for ways to help combat the growing problem. According to the Sacramento Bee, part of the issue lies in the fact that once a senior falls once, he or she is more likely to fall again. Furthermore, it may set off a chain of events stemming from the fear of falling. A person may become less active thinking this will reduce the risk of a fall, but this actually leads to weaker muscles and a higher chance of another event.

Seat Belt Use Now Surpasses 90 Percent

It's true - seat belts do save lives. For years, this message has been hammered home in countless public service advertisements, in driver's ed classes and in other ways. These efforts are delivering impressive results. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that in 2015 alone, more than 14,000 lives were saved because drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts. And since 1975, seat belts have saved more than 345,000 lives.

Protecting workers against workplace discrimination

Californians have the right to be employed and not fear that they will be discriminated against based on their age, gender, sex, skin color, race, nationality, disability or pregnancy. In fact, there are many laws that specifically prohibit certain behaviors. Employers as well as employees should become familiar with what is being done to combat workplace discrimination.

Discussing the effort to improve commercial trucking safety

Commercial truck drivers spend a significant amount of time on California roads. While these professionals may have much more experience operating a vehicle than other motorists, many accidents have still occurred due to truck operator error. As such, there has been an effort by government agencies to continue to push for better commercial motor vehicle safety.

Will audible alerts on electric and hybrid vehicles save lives?

Blind people and those with limited vision usually have heightened hearing capabilities. But despite this, they often have difficulty perceiving electric and hybrid vehicles as they approach. This results in more than 2,400 pedestrian accidents every year, many of them fatal.

How can I safely share the road with cyclists?

As a California driver, you may find yourself frequently sharing the road with cyclists. This can be the cause of much stress for many motorists, especially when cyclists fail to follow pertinent traffic laws. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of a serious accident occurring when driving with cyclists.

How to prevent truck driver fatigue

Truck drivers in California often make long hauls that can entail many hours on the road. While there are laws in place preventing truckers from working too much without sleep, some truck drivers and their companies flout these regulations in order to make more deliveries at a faster rate.

What are some safety tips for new motorcycle riders?

Learning to ride a motorcycle can be a rewarding experience for many California residents. However, the roads are often dangerous for motorcyclists, even if you diligently obey all pertinent traffic regulations. While you can’t predict the actions of other motorists, especially when they behave in a thoughtless manner, there are steps you can take to mitigate your risk of injury.

Slip and fall accidents can cause terrible injuries

Have you ever been to the supermarket and as you are walking down the dairy aisle, you watch as a customer drops a gallon of milk? The liquid spills everywhere and covers the floor, creating a wet, slick surface that would be dangerous for anyone to walk on, let alone unsuspecting shoppers. This situation, as comical as it may seem to some, is indicative of the premises liability risks that commercial property owners face.

Fiery accident hurts 6 people, 2 of whom suffer serious injuries

Six people were injured in a car accident near Los Angeles recently. The crash involved more than one vehicle, but details are surprisingly sparse at this time. All that is know is that a crash occurred and one of the vehicles erupted in flames. Six people suffered injuries in the accident, two of whom suffered serious injuries. The other four people were dealt minor injuries.

Motorcyclists are at risk out on the road, so be careful out there

Many people look at motorcycles and actively think about how dangerous they are and how they could never imagine using such a vehicle. While it may be a fair criticism in some respects, there is another side of the coin. Many motorcyclists don't ride their vehicle for the "death defying" aspect of it. Instead, they ride motorcycles because they enjoy the freedom of riding such a vehicle. It is their preferred method of transportation. What's wrong with that?

You were just in an accident. What should you do now?

No on ever wants to be involved in a car accident, but sometimes you don't have that choice. Sometimes, the accident comes to you. Another driver was reckless or made a mistake, and as a result -- BAM! -- your car is wrecked and you are in a daze. Now the most critical thing that you need to be considering is how you should handle yourself in the moments immediately following that meeting of metal.
