Nighttime driving and the increased risk of fatal car accidents

People who drive during the day have a significant risk of being hit by a drowsy, drunk, distracted or otherwise negligent motorist. Once the sun sets in California, however, people face an even greater risk of becoming the victim of an auto accident. According to the National Safety Council, the rate of motor vehicle accident fatalities is three times higher at night than it is during the day.

One of the most common reasons why driving at night can be so dangerous is that it is harder to see with a decreased amount of natural light. This is especially true for people over the age of 50, as older motorists require more light to see properly. It is also difficult for people to judge the distance and speed of oncoming vehicles in low-light situations, which may cause a car to pull out in front of an approaching vehicle. Furthermore, when bright headlights shine directly into a driver’s eyes, it can cause a kind of temporary blindness.

Although distracted driving can be hazardous at any time of day, drivers who text or talk on their mobile devices while driving at night are more likely to cause a collision.  In addition, there are more drunk drivers on the road at night than there are traveling on the roads during the day.

In order to avoid becoming the next victim of a serious auto accident, drivers must use extra caution when driving at night. They should always wear their seatbelt, avoid speeding and wait until the coast is completely clear before pulling out into traffic.
