Avoid swimming pool accidents this summer

As the summer approaches and more children have available time during the day, the number of trips to the pool will increase. Unfortunately, this may lead to increased incidents around and in the pool.

Understanding the risks and preparing for them can help to manage the risk that you and your loved ones experience. There are a few pool accident types that are most common.

Drowning

According to the CDC, drowning is an issue for people of all ages and nationalities; however, it is a strong contributor to accidental deaths of children. Those children who do survive a drowning incident run the risk of suffering brain damage or other physical issues. Considering this, it is highly important that people learn how to swim, especially if they are going to be in the pool area. Having supervisory adults around who are knowledgeable and equipped to handle emergency pool situations is beneficial as well.

Slipping

Slipping or tripping can happen anywhere. However, with excess puddles of water around, and people entering and exiting the pool frequently, the possible occurrence of slip and fall accidents increases drastically around pools. Therefore, parties being vigilant to watch where they are stepping, and not running or engaging in horseplay around the pool, is essential.

Being impaired

The use of alcohol or drugs can impair people's physical abilities, thought process and reaction time. Any of these things by themselves can pose a danger, but all together, they could prove to be paralyzing, which is dangerous in a pool setting. For those adults who choose to partake of impairing substances around the pool, it would be beneficial to have a designated sober party around.

Though avoiding these things can help to limit the chances of injury at the pool, they do not eliminate them all together. Having supervision around the pool, as well as knowledge of proper behavior in the pool area, are key to a safe and enjoyable time.
