Learning to ride a motorcycle can be a rewarding experience for many California residents. However, the roads are often dangerous for motorcyclists, even if you diligently obey all pertinent traffic regulations. While you can’t predict the actions of other motorists, especially when they behave in a thoughtless manner, there are steps you can take to mitigate your risk of injury.

Consumer Reports provides a list of essential motorcycle safety tips suited to new riders. First and foremost, you should ensure you have the right gear to remain protected on your ride. This should include clothing with an adequate amount of coverage to make sure you are safe in case a crash occurs. The right footwear is equally important; footwear must cover the ankle to offer support, even when riding in temperate weather. You should also invest in dependable eye protection, such as goggles.

Along with gear, selecting a good helmet is highly important. While some riders choose to forgo head protection, doing so can increase your risk of a fatal head injury up to 40 percent. While simply wearing a helmet is essential, picking the right type of helmet also plays a role in increased protection. In this case, a helmet that offers full coverage is usually a good choice for all riders regardless of skill level.

When it comes to riding, you must remain alert at all times to be able to respond to the actions of other drivers. Maintaining an appropriate distance behind other vehicles is another important concern. This will provide you with enough time to stop in the event of an unexpected maneuver. Additionally, you should be wary of riding in poor weather conditions until you increase your skill level. If you do find yourself riding in inclement weather (such as wind and rain), use only deliberate movements and decrease speed as necessary.
