How to help a victim in a burning car

California residents are far too familiar with the dry conditions that can maintain and spread fire. But just how prepared can one be to face a fire in their own vehicle? Needless to say, the actions one takes when someone’s vehicle is spewing smoke and flame can make all the difference in survivability.

Fire rescue is a job meant for professionals, as stated by the Fire Rescue Magazine. However, unfortunately there are some cases when an accident happens too far away from a fire station, or when the fire is blazing too strongly for a bystander to wait for help. In this case, people should be aware of the dangers to watch out for when entering or getting near a vehicle that is on fire. This includes certain metals like lithium and titanium, as well as the gas from both the fuel tank and from the tires, which may not be filled with air.

Knowledge of the most dangerous parts of the car is only step one, though. Popular Mechanics states that one must also be familiar with the process of fire rescue to some degree. This means understanding what to do to minimize one’s own panic, and how to keep the victim’s panic from overwhelming them. It also means knowing how to avoid giving in to adrenaline rushes, and how to properly break down the windows in order to create an escape route for the victim with minimal harm to them. Finally, the rescuer should also understand that gawkers will always appear around the scene of an accident. They should act quickly to block the area off, limiting damage.

These steps will allow a rescuer to work quickly and safely. It may save not only a victim’s life, but also keep their own protected in the process.
