Over the last several decades, there have been many attempts to educate people on the risks of alcohol-impaired driving. However, in California and other states, driving under the influence continues to be a dangerous issue that causes a large number of deaths and injuries. Consequently, there are ongoing efforts by advocacy groups and government organizations to not only monitor the drinking and driving dilemma, but also provide tools and strategies that may prevent it.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides statistics on the prevalence of drunk driving. In 2014, California experienced over 800 fatal accidents involving alcohol impairment, which was one of the highest figures in the United States. Also, the country saw over a thousand kids under the age of 15 killed in car crashes. Approximately 19 percent of these deadly incidents included alcohol-related factors. Overall, nearly 10,000 people died in accidents that included a driver that was impaired by alcohol.

It is also worth noting that that there are economical repercussions as well. Impaired driving incidents may result in various expenses such as loss of property, and legal and medical costs. Recent reports reviewed by the NHTSA reveal that when taking into account loss of money and quality of life, the total cost attributed to crashes involving alcohol is almost $840 billion.

In response to the staggering statistics calculated by various agencies and advocates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides several suggestions for prevention. Educating the public on the hazards of drunk driving may be achieved by communicating information through multiple media channels, setting up high school educational programs and encouraging community involvement. Furthermore, legal actions such as revoking the licenses of offenders for at least 90 days, requiring breathalyzer devices in car ignitions, stopping drivers at DUI checkpoints, and maintaining minimum age and blood alcohol content limits may continue to be effective defenses against drunk drivers.
