The link between slip-and-fall accidents and brain injuries

California business owners and property owners have a responsibility to keep their spaces free from debris and other matter than may cause someone to slip and fall. Slip-and-fall accidents can cause serious injuries, including traumatic brain damage. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that falls are the number one cause of traumatic brain injury in the U.S. If someone should slip, fall and injure themselves while patronizing a store or walking across a property, the owner of that store or property may be held liable for any injuries that occur.

When a person’s head is hit with a sudden impact, such as on the ground in a slip-and-fall accident, it causes the brain to hit against the hard, inner skull bone. This jolt may cause the brain to bleed, bruise and swell within the skull cavity. In some cases, the injury may not appear serious immediately after the fall. As the brain continues to swell and pressure builds up within the skull cavity, however, the signs of symptoms of brain trauma may be readily apparent.

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, these signs include the following:

  •          Difficulty hearing, speaking or seeing.
  •          Changes in mood and/or sleeping patterns.
  •          Trouble concentrating, organizing thoughts or focusing on a task.
  •          Muscle weakness, tingling in the extremities, convulsions or seizures.
  •          Consistent headaches, nausea and vomiting.

When people suspect that they have a brain injury, it is important to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Early diagnosis can lead to a better outcome for victims of brain trauma. Doctors can customize a treatment plan, which often includes speech therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy and rehabilitation.
