California can be a great place to ride a motorcycle. The sun and comfortable weather are a biker’s paradise. However, motorcycle accidents are a very real danger on the roads. According to the Insurance Information Institute, 92,000 people were injured and 4,594 people died in accidents involving motorcycles in the country in 2014. Most motorcycle accident injuries and deaths occurred between the hours of 3 pm and 9 pm.

Alcohol use was found in 29 percent of fatal accidents. Speeding was noted in 33 percent of fatal accidents. Another factor that seemed to play into accidents was non-licensed drivers, which were found in 28 percent of all fatal accidents. While these are all rather large issues that could have been the cause of accidents in 2014, they weren’t the only reasons accidents occurred. outlined other causes of motorcycle accidents. Most severe accidents are caused by driver errors, either the motorcycle driver or a driver of another vehicle. Other causes may include road hazards, such as loose gravel, or mechanical failures, such as the brakes not working. Typically, it is other drivers who cause motorcycle accidents and the causes are anything from distracted driving to just not seeing the bike. The most common accident occurs when a vehicle is turning left and does not see a motorcycle coming straight at it.

Almost all accidents result in some type of injury to the biker. These can range from mild skin abrasions to death. Broken bones and head injuries are common, especially for riders who are not wearing helmets. Constantly monitoring the road, paying attention to other vehicles, wearing safety gear and following the law are the best things a rider can do to prevent accidents.
