3 safety precautions that can help prevent construction accidents

Construction accidents are tragic both in their frequency and their preventability. Too often, a simple mistake on a construction site causes an accident that will have a lasting impact on the victim. Taking simple precautions to encourage safety and prevent such mishaps is the best way to ensure that workers are kept safe from any hazards beyond those that are already present on a construction site.

The following three tips are a good place to start for improving safety and preventing accidents. If you have been injured on a construction site, you should seek medical care and consider consulting with an attorney about your case. In the meantime, implement the following three tips to reduce the possibility of incidents:

1. Maintain all equipment

Many construction site accidents occur because of equipment that has not been properly maintained and/or inspected. You are working with power tools and drills that require proper training and skill to operate correctly. If the equipment itself is not safe, the user is in danger of injury. Site supervisors should always ensure that the tools being used have been verified for safe operation.

2. Train employees

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, construction workers face greater risk than workers in other industries. This is due to hazards such as falling, collapsing scaffolds and trenches and the potential for electric shock. The best defense against such hazards is comprehensively training all workers on a construction site in proper protocol for handling risk and avoiding injury on the job.

3. Use correct protective gear

Many injuries are also due to a failure to wear personal protective equipment. This is vital for anybody working on a construction site. Protective gear such as safety glasses, harnesses and hard hats should always be worn when necessary. Neglecting to wear protective equipment needlessly puts you at risk of serious injuries. If the right protective gear is not available, wait to work until it is made available.
