How to talk to insurance companies after a car accident

Following a motor vehicle accident, you need to protect yourself and your interests. It is best that you collect evidence and talk to the right people in the event the car crash ends up going to court.

One of the most important things to do following a collision is speaking with your auto insurance agency. You should begin the claims process as soon as possible, but there are certain considerations to make. The things you say to your insurance provider can greatly affect the outcome, which is why many people prefer having their attorneys handle all communications.

Only talk about facts

There is no need to give a beat-by-beat account of what transpired. Stick to the basics, and if the representative asks you anything that you are unsure of, then you can simply say, "I do not know." Many things can go wrong if your insurance agency catches you in a lie or inconsistency, even an unintentional one.

Do not take on any blame

Your story may reveal evidence that you share some of the blame for the accident. However, you want to avoid admitting it outright by saying something such as, "I am sorry I caused the collision." Additionally, you do not want to say to an insurance representative that you feel fine. If anything, you can say that you still need to see a doctor to determine the extent of your injuries.

Avoid talking to the other driver's insurance provider

You may receive a phone call from the other driver's insurance agency. It is important to realize that you are under no obligation to speak with a representative of this company, and doing so can actually hurt your case.

The best advice to heed after a car accident is to speak with an attorney before you talk with your insurance company.
