Speed limits reduced around Los Angeles

Despite efforts by law enforcement, the death rate from car accidents in Los Angeles has remained high in recent years. Although the initial goal of the city's Vision Zero initiative was to decrease the total number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents by 20 percent, the rate only dropped by six percent.

In an effort to reduce the number of traffic fatalities, the city has lowered speed limits. This initiative will also see more speed limit signs around the city so that drivers will be definitively aware of how fast is safe to drive. By reducing speeds, drivers can significantly reduce their likelihoods of ending up in auto accidents

What will the new signs entail?

In February of this year, Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that he would implement new speed limits across Los Angeles. The new law will impact 71 streets. Along with the lower speed limits, Garcetti stated that more law enforcement will be on the streets to crack down on drivers who travel above the limits. The goal is to reach zero traffic fatalities by 2025, so ideally, drivers will take these new speed limits into account as they go out.

Could this plan work?

It is natural to feel annoyed at the new speed limits, but the evidence does suggest it will make an impact in reducing fatalities. One study published in Accident Analysis & Prevention found that pedestrians are much more likely to survive an accident if the car travels at a lower speed. The study found that a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling 24 miles per hour has a 10 percent chance of dying while a pedestrian hit by a vehicle traveling 40 mph now has a 50 percent chance of death. The enforced lower speed limits may not eliminate fatalities entirely, but they will hopefully be effective at reducing the number of dangerous accidents that occur.

People who have been injured by speeding drivers and family members of fatal accident victims may be eligible for compensation. They should speak with an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible to learn about their legal options.
