Safety tips for family trips to amusement parks

There is no shortage of amusement parks in Southern California. These parks are fun places to take the kids on vacation and provide lasting memeories.

You may be planning a family trip to one or more of the following:

  • Disneyland
  • Universal Studios
  • Six Flags
  • SeaWorld
  • Legoland
  • Water parks

Fun rides and cute characters are perfect for the kids to enjoy. Unfortunately, these attractions can also be dangerous. The number of 2016 emergency room visits due to amusement park injuries is a stunning 30,900. This means health and safety are vital concerns when visiting theme parks. Here are a few tips for keeping yourself and your kids safe.

Follow the rules

Of course, the easiest way to stay safe is to pay attention and adhere to all park rules, such as the following:

  • Keeping hands, arms, feet and legs inside rides
  • Following passenger loading limits
  • Securing belongings before rides start

Make sure your kids are aware of the importance of these rules. They exist to keep everyone safe, not reduce fun.

Use safety gear carefully

Most rides have some sort of safety gear, such as a bar, belt, strap or latch. Double-check this gear for yourself and anyone else with you. Hopefully, an attendant will also come by and ensure all passengers are secure. Be extra careful for any thin, small or overweight riders.

Watch your step

Amusement park accidents do not only consist of harrowing rollercoaster malfunctions. It is easy to slip or trip and get hurt while attending a theme park. Spilled food and drink, slippery surfaces from water rides, trash on the ground, poor lighting and big crowds can all contribute to slip or trip and fall accidents. Everyone in your party should be watchful of such hazards.

Know where to get help

Be ready for the worst possible outcome before something goes wrong so you know what to do. Take a look at the park map so you know where first-aid stations are located.

If you or a family member is injured at an amusement park, you may be able to claim compensation. Speak with an experienced personal injury attorney to learn about your legal options.
