Speeding is probably more dangerous than you think

Speeding is one of the most dangerous things you can do behind the wheel. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, speeding caused 9,717 deaths on U.S. roadways. If you want to stay safe on the road, you must keep your vehicle’s speed in check.

You probably know to not speed in your car, truck or SUV. Still, occasionally, you may want to refresh your memory in a quest to remain safe on California’s crowded roadways. Here are four tips for keeping your speed under control:

1. Budget your time

Perhaps the easiest way to exceed posted limits is to fall behind schedule. After all, if you are late for a job interview, an important meeting or coffee with friends, you may think about pressing the pedal to the floorboard. To better manage both your speed and anxiety, build a few extra minutes into your travel schedule.

2. Relax before you drive

Driving in Los Angeles County can be tremendously stressful. Still, if you let the grind get to you, the extra adrenaline coursing through your veins may encourage you to speed. Therefore, try to relax before you hit the road.

3. Use your car’s cruise control

Nowadays, most cars come equipped with cruise control. When on the highway, engage your vehicle’s cruise setting. For bonus points, try to set the cruise control right at the speed limit instead of a few miles over it.

4. Have fun in a controlled environment

There is nothing wrong with loving to drive fast. California’s roads, streets and highways, though, are not the place to exercise your need for speed. If you want to redline your vehicle, do so in a controlled environment. Private racetracks and strips allow you to burn rubber without endangering yourself or others.

Every California driver has probably exceeded the speed limit at least once. You must realize, though, that speeding can be exceedingly dangerous. By committing to driving reasonably, you do your part to save lives.

If you have suffered injuries in a car accident, you may be able to claim compensation. Speak with an experienced attorney to learn about your legal options.
