TBI resulting from a rear-end collision is all too common

Perhaps you associate most head injuries with a sport like football. After all, we often hear about players sustaining concussions on the field.

However, it turns out that most traumatic brain injury cases result from falls and from vehicle crashes.

The silent epidemic

There are two forms of traumatic brain injuries. Open TBI is a circumstance in which an object pierces the skull and enters the brain. Closed is the more common form and results from a blow to the head. A concussion is an example of closed TBI. However, because many people do not think of a concussion in terms of a brain injury, and because symptoms are not always evident at the time of an accident, TBI has earned the title of “a silent epidemic.”

Low-speed complications

You may be the victim of a rear-end collision caused by a driver who was going no more than 3 or 4 mph. At that speed, you would not anticipate much in the way of injuries. In fact, you would probably get out of your car, exchange insurance information with the other driver and await the arrival of a police officer so you could get a copy of the report she prepares and be on your way. You may not notice any symptoms of a concussion or more serious head injury for hours, even days.

A bit of history

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 2 million people in our country experience TBI each year. Car crashes are responsible for causing 14.3% of these head injuries, which equates to 286,000 traumatic brain injuries annually. Research indicates that even mild brain trauma can lead to long-term memory or thinking issues.

Next steps

If you are ever the victim of a rear-end collision, seek a medical evaluation promptly to head off complications that could result from a delayed head injury diagnosis. The medical report will also tie any injury you may have directly to the car crash and act as essential information when it is time to submit a claim for the insurance compensation you deserve.
