Road Rash Explained

Road rash, medically known as a skin abrasion, is the result of scraping the skin across a rugged surface, such as pavement. Road rash can happen to any exposed part of the body, such as the face, hands, shoulders, knees, shins, ankles, and other areas. There are different forms of road rash, ranging in severity, such as:

  • Avulsion: An avulsion occurs when the top layers of the skin are scraped away and can include fatty tissues, as well as the muscle or bone that is below the skin
  • Open wound: An open wound occurs when the skin tissue becomes torn and may require stitches
  • Compression: Compression road rash occurs when a part of the body is trapped in between two objects. For example, a motorcycle rider’s leg becomes trapped between the bike and the roadway in the event of an accident.

Similar to burn injuries, road rash is also categorized by degrees. First-degree road rash occurs when the outer layer of the skin is scraped and is generally characterized by a red and tender injury. When a first-degree road rash occurs, it generally does not require medical treatment and does not result in permanent scarring. Second-degree road rash affects the lower layers of the skin and can typically be treated with at-home treatments and has a lower risk of complications. Lastly, third-degree road rash is the most severe among the three, and occurs when the skin, fatty tissues, muscle, and bone beneath the skin are affected.
