Southern California is dangerous for motorcyclists

Getting around on a motorcycle seems like a great way to go. As a motorcyclist, you can split lanes and take HOV express routes. However, there is a downside to all this speed and convenience: accidents.

The dangers lurking for bikers on the roads in and around Los Angeles continue to rise. Is there anything you can do to protect yourself when taking to the road on two wheels?

Protective gear may help

One precaution motorcycle riders can take is wearing protective clothing. California does not have a mandatory helmet law for people over the age of 18. Wearing a helmet may help prevent massive head trauma should you get in an accident. Special jackets with extra padding and even back braces may also protect your body from some of the impacts of an accident.

Avoid lane splitting or sharing

Lane splitting is legal in California, but that does not mean you should do it. The practice of squeezing between vehicles on highways and roadways is one of the quickest ways to get injured. This is due, in large part, to low visibility. Drivers operating motor vehicles cannot always see motorcyclists coming up between traffic lanes. If you insist on lane splitting, wear a bright reflective vest and go slowly. The California Highway Patrol also suggests taking special classes on how to properly practice lane splitting.

Keep your cool

In 2017, a video showing an incident between a motorcycle and a vehicle depicted the devastating consequences of road rage. The footage shows the motorcyclist kick the side of the car after it cut in front of the bike. After the kick, the car careens into a vehicle in the adjacent lane causing an accident. Motor vehicle and motorcycle operators should maintain their composure, even in stressful situations.

All drivers should pay better attention to their surroundings and the vehicles around them. In the case of motorcyclists, failing to do so may result in catastrophic injuries or even death.

Those bikers who have suffered harm as the result of an accident may be eligible for compensation. They should speak with an experienced personal injury attorney to learn about their legal options.
