The Los Angeles area has gotten a lot of rain as of late. Storms poured through Southern California in January and February, and with that rains comes an increase in car accidents

It does not rain often in Southern California, but when it does, many people do not adapt properly. Wet roads call for a different driving style or else you will greatly increase your chances of getting in a collision. Here are some tips to keep in mind the next time it rains in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas.

Slow down

Although the speed limit may be 55 miles per hour normally, you want to travel slower when it rains. The rain on the road causes your car to require a greater distance to come to a complete stop. Additionally, driving slower will reduce your chances of hydroplaning. If this occurs, your car's wheels will lose contact with the road, and you could spin out of control. It is best to reduce your speed by 5 or 10 mph under the speed limit.

Keep your lights on

It may be the middle of the day, but you want your car's headlights on during a storm. It will be more difficult for other drivers to see you with your lights. It will also help you see how much distance you have between you and the car in front of you. For rain, fog or smoke, your lights should be on.

Keep your vehicle prepared

You want someone to inspect your vehicle once in a while to ensure everything works properly. You should replace your windshield wipers once every year or else streaks will form. A mechanic should check the tires regularly to make sure the tread is still deep. Finally, you want to ensure your brakes work as they should. When you do all this, you guarantee your car is ready for any weather.

If you do suffer injuries in a car accident, you may be able to claim compensation. Speak with a personal injury attorney to learn ab out your legal options.
